Is Octopus Halal?
I personally can’t seem to decide. Japanese and Chinese people and people from that general area have been eating octopus and squid for ages. Is it similar to the Arabian lizard situation in which it’s halal?
Is it even a grey matter or Is it clearly halal?

حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةُ وَالدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ الْخِنزِيرِ وَمَا أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ اللَّهِ بِهِ وَالْمُنْخَنِقَةُ وَالْمَوْقُوذَةُ وَالْمُتَرَدِّيَةُ وَالنَّطِيحَةُ وَمَا أَكَلَ السَّبُعُ إِلَّا مَا ذَكَّيْتُمْ وَمَا ذُبِحَ عَلَى النُّصُبِ وَأَن تَسْتَقْسِمُوا بِالْأَزْلَامِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ فِسْقٌ ۗ الْيَوْمَ يَئِسَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِن دِينِكُمْ فَلَا تَخْشَوْهُمْ وَاخْشَوْنِ ۚ الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا ۚ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ فِي مَخْمَصَةٍ غَيْرَ مُتَجَانِفٍ لِّإِثْمٍ ۙ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Qur’an 5:3
Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
تم پر مردار اور لہو اور سور کا گوشت حرام کیا گیا ہے اور وہ جانور جس پر الله کے سوا کسی اور کا نام پکارا جائے جو گلا گھوٹ کر یا چوٹ سے یا بلندی سے گر کر یا سینگ مارنے سے مر گیا ہو اور وہ جسے کسی درندے نے پھاڑ ڈالا ہو مگر جسے تم نے ذبح کر لیا ہو اور وہ جو کسی تھان پر ذبح کیا جائے اور یہ کہ جوئے کے تیروں سے تقسیم کرو یہ سب گناہ ہیں آج تمہارے دین سے کافر نا امید ہو گئے سو ان سے نہ ڈرو اور مجھ سے ڈرو آج میں تمہارے لیے تمہارا دین پورا کر چکا اور میں نے تم پر اپنا احسان پورا کر دیا اور میں نے تمہارے واسطے اسلام ہی کو دین پسند کیا ہے پھر جو کوئی بھوک سے بیتاب ہو جائے لیکن گناہ پر مائل نہ ہو تو الله معاف کرنے والا مہربان ہے
يَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا أُحِلَّ لَهُمْ ۖ قُلْ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ ۙ وَمَا عَلَّمْتُم مِّنَ الْجَوَارِحِ مُكَلِّبِينَ تُعَلِّمُونَهُنَّ مِمَّا عَلَّمَكُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ فَكُلُوا مِمَّا أَمْسَكْنَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ ۖ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ
Qur’an 5:4
They ask thee what is lawful to them (as food). Say: lawful unto you are (all) things good and pure: and what ye have taught your trained hunting animals (to catch) in the manner directed to you by Allah: eat what they catch for you, but pronounce the name of Allah over it: and fear Allah; for Allah is swift in taking account.
تجھ سے پوچھتے ہیں کہ ان کے لیے کیا چیز حلال ہے کہہ دو تمہارے واسطے سب پاکیزہ چیزیں حلا ل کی گئی ہیں اور جو شکاری جانور جسے شکار پر دوڑنے کی تعلیم دو کہ انہیں سکھاتے ہو اس میں سے جو الله نے تمہیں سکھایا ہے سو اس میں سے کھاؤ جو وہ تمہارے لیے پکڑ رکھیں اور اس پر الله کا نا م لو اور الله سے ڈرتے رہو بیشک الله جلد حساب لینے والا ہے
أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُ مَتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِلسَّيَّارَةِ ۖ وَحُرِّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَرِّ مَا دُمْتُمْ حُرُمًا ۗ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ
Qur’an 5:96
Lawful to you is the pursuit of water-game and its use for food,- for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel; but forbidden is the pursuit of land-game;- as long as ye are in the sacred precincts or in pilgrim garb. And fear Allah, to Whom ye shall be gathered back.
تمہارے لیے دریا کا شکار کرنا اوراس کا کھانا حلال کیا گیا ہے تمہارے واسطے اور مسافروں کے لیے فائدہ ہے اور تم پر جنگل کا شکار کرناحرام کیا گیا ہے جب تک کہ تم احرام میں ہو اور اس الله سے ڈرو جس کی طرف جمع کیے جاؤ گے
All those sea food are halal if they die outside water. Octopus lives in sea. If taken out of water and it dies than it is Halal.
Snakes, crocodile, turtles, tortoise will not die if taken out of water, hence are not Halal.

How does 5:96 imply all seafood is halal? It just says that seafood is halal in ihram snd land game isn’t.

According to verse 5:96 , all sea food are made Halal in general. And than it describes the prohibition of hunting land animals while in Ahram. Both are separate cases, do not conclude from it that all sea foods are Halal only if you are in Ahram.

That is not what I’m saying. The whole of 5:96 is in the context of ihraam. The point is hunting in the sea is allowed but not on land. The principle of Tayyib and khabeeth still applies to the seafood that can be hunted and 5:96 is not a principle ayah for what is halal and haraam tk eat in general rather it relates to specific law regarding ihraam.
It doesn’t say أحِل لكم كل ما في البحر
