  • Were Adam And Eve Not Living In Paradise Before Being Moved Out?

    Assalam Alaikum,

I recently came across Ghamidi sahab claiming Adam/Eve (as) were not really in Paradise but some garden within the Earth?

    My question is,

    (1) Doesn’t it idea contradict with 7:24 where Allah (swt) then asks them to descend/move out (to where?) to “Earth” ! Obviously they were not on Earth.

    (2) “Jannah” in that same context is mentioned 28 times in the Quran, and Each time it meant “Paradise”.. then why is it that just one time (7:19) Ghamidi sahab is confident that it would have a different meaning? Quran is very consistent with the choice and use of words.

Please address my two arguments above. Kindly do not send any links/videos.

    jazakAllah khair!

“Ahbitu” means to move out from the garden, to live somewhere outside the garden. There is no indication that it was somewhere out of the planet Earth. On the other hand, the way the birth of the first person is described in the Quran clearly indicates all that was going on was on the earth. See 32: 7.

The word Jannah means garden. It is used for the Jannah in the hereafter, but it is also used for the ordinary gardens of our lands. see, for example, 34: 15, 17: 91.

So linguistically, there is no problem in taking the jannah of Adam the one existed on the earth.

The Quranic word used in Quran 2:36 is ‘اهْبِطُوا’. The expression ‘go down‘ / ‘get down‘ is used here in this very meaning as used in the expression of ‘مِصْرا اهْبِطُوا’ of verse 61 of Surah Baqarah (“[Then go] live in some Egypt“). The overall meaning is thus ‘O Adam and Eve and O Satan all of you move [out] from this garden and go in the earth’. (For the whole incident of Adam and Eve, please see: Discussion 82606)

Among other verses, as pointed out by Dr. Irfan Sahab, Quran 71:17 also makes it clear that Human Beings came out of this earth the way plants grow.

    وَاللَّهُ أَنبَتَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًا

and it is He Who has grown you from the earth in such an elaborate way. (Quran 71:17)
