    Masturbation is against the spirit of modesty in Islam. For those who believe in Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari, following advise was given by Prophet Muhammad pbuh to guard modesty (i.e. private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.),

    حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصِ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عُمَارَةُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ مَعَ عَلْقَمَةَ والْأَسْوَدِ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَبَابًا لَا نَجِدُ شَيْئًا ، فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ ، مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ ، فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ ، وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَعَلَيْهِ بِالصَّوْمِ فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ وِجَاءٌ .

    Sahih Bukhari – 5066

    Narrated `Abdullah: We were with the Prophet while we were young and had no wealth whatever. So Allah’s Apostle said, O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power.

    ‎ میں علقمہ اور اسود ( رحمہم اللہ ) کے ساتھ عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا، انہوں نے ہم سے کہا کہ ہم نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے زمانہ میں نوجوان تھے اور ہمیں کوئی چیز میسر نہیں تھی۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہم سے فرمایا کہ نوجوانوں کی جماعت! تم میں جسے بھی نکاح کرنے کے لیے مالی طاقت ہو اسے نکاح کر لینا چاہئے کیونکہ یہ نظر کو نیچی رکھنے والا اور شرمگاہ کی حفاظت کرنے والا عمل ہے اور جو کوئی نکاح کی بوجہ غربت طاقت نہ رکھتا ہو اسے چاہیے کہ روزہ رکھے کیونکہ روزہ اس کی خواہشات نفسانی کو توڑ دے گا۔

    Sahih Muslim – 3398

    Alqama reported: While I was walking with ‘Abdullah at Mina, ‘Uthman happened to meet him. He stopped there and began to talk with him. Uthman said to him: Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, should we not marry you to a young girl who may recall to you some of the past of your bygone days; thereupon he said: If you say so, Allah’s Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) said: 0 young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes from casting (evil glances). and preserves one from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting for it is a means of controlling sexual desire.

    ابو معاویہ نے ہمیں اعمش سے خبر دی ، انہوں نے ابراہیم سے ، انہوں نے علقمہ سے روایت کی ، انہوں نے کہا : میں منیٰ میں حضرت عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کے ساتھ پیدل چل رہا تھا کہ حضرت عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ سے ان کی ملاقات ہوئی ، وہ کھڑے ہو کر ان سے باتیں کرنے لگے ۔ سیدنا عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ نے اِن سے کہا : ابوعبدالرحمٰن! کیا ہم کسی نوجوان لڑکی سے آپ کی شادی نہ کرا دیں ، شاید وہ آپ کو آپ کا وہی زمانہ یاد کرا دے جو گزر چکا ہے؟ کہا : تو حضرت عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا : اگر آپ نے یہ بات کہی ہے تو ( اس سے پہلے ) رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہم سے فرمایا تھا : اے جوانوں کے گروہ! تم میں سے جو کوئی شادی کی استطاعت رکھتا ہو وہ شادی کر لے ، یہ نگاہ کو زیادہ جھکانے والی اور شرمگاہ کی زیادہ حفاظت کرنے والی ہے اور جو استطاعت نہیں رکھتا تو وہ روزے کو لازم کر لے ، یہ اس کے لیے خواہش کو قابو میں کرنے کا ذریعہ ہے۔

      Juned Ahmed please provide valid references. Laws are not derived from opinions – but solid evidence from the Quran and the Sunnah. There are no verses of the Quran as you stated above that encourage fasting in order to curb sexual urge. There’s a narration in that regard, but narrations are situational and don’t provide a basis for legislation.

      If a biological need is made haram, it has to be evident in the Quran and the Sunnah without any guesswork or inferences.

      To the contrary Ibn e Hazam has provided several references from sahaba who considered masturbation to be permissible.

    First of all, nothing in the Quran or hadith prohibits masturbation. Those who consider it forbidden argue from Quran verses 23:5-7. The linguistic error in understanding these verses has been clarified by Ghamidi sahab. Please see:

    Secondly, the confusion about why hadith does not provide a basis for legislation stems from not understanding what the nature of hadith corpus really is. I invite you to investigate this topic in a bit more detail with a sincere and an open mind. In short, hadiths mostly relate Prophet Muhammad SAW’s application of God’s law (present in the Quran and the Sunnah) in a particular situations. Since majority of hadith reports do not include context, when we take one and apply it as a general rule, a lot of times we end up with results that are exactly opposite of the Quran, the Sunnah, the hadith itself, and are even counter to reason and rationality.

    For example, a hadith is generally quoted about fasting in order to control sexual urges. Now imagine a soldier who is away from home for years at a stretch protecting our borders in excruciatingly cold temperatures. Or a construction worker who digs mountains in excruciatingly hot temperatures. If we advise them to fast, they will definitely die out of dehydration. Then why would Prophet SAW give people such an advise? We could only know if we knew the context. One could argue that this advise doesn’t apply to extreme conditions – but halal and haram are generic, not conditional. Exceptions can be conditional, but then again we would need evidence from God about what can be considered an exception.

    Lastly, I did not present Ibn-e-Hazm’s evidence from the companions as a basis for any legislation. Legislation by definition forbids certain things or sets their boundaries. For example, walking on the streets is permissible by default. If our government wants to make it forbidden for any reason or set some boundaries around it they will legislate.

    That said, I can definitely see that some people might consider masturbation wrong, and I respect their opinion as long as they do not try to impose it on others. When we term something as haram, we need to have clear evidence from God. One could argue that it’s immoral and God forbids everything immoral, but morality only comes into picture in reference to our behavior with others. For example, lying to one self, or cheating one self is universally not considered immoral.

      Yes but it doesn’t mean that we can make anything haram on our bodies according to our own wishes. God has given us our bodies and it is Him who has given us certain biological needs. In order for us to consider fulfilling one such need as haram, we need clear evidence from Him. With statements of justification like this we only serve our own ideas of how the religion should be, not the intent of God.

      I don’t think anybody here is saying it is Haram. It is not modest and does not compliance with the spirit of Islam. As we believe we all are in this temporary world for a test. After we die we will have eternal life hopefully in Jannat. To achieve that reward we must prove that we deserve that. The way Ghamidi school is presenting this issue, they are indirectly encouraging our youngsters to involve in such immodest act.

      Instead, Ghamidi school should discourage our young generation to watch pornography, which in most cases ends up in masturbation.

      Some youngster will still do it but please do not make it official. Please leave the curtain there as was left by our Prophet Muhammad pbuh and spend more energy in promoting his pbuh advise to get married, if possible. Also encourage Muslims to offer five times prayers which will definitely calm down their immodest desires.

      I completely agree with the first few sentences.

      I do however disagree that Ghamidi Center is encouraging people to engage in the activity. Our job is to educate people about Islam without any consideration for our own preferences. When we tell people with evidence that masturbation is not haram, we also tell people with all our energies that the purpose of Islam is to attain purification (tazkiya) and explain to them in every which way possible how to do it. This doesn’t mean that we should hide things out of our own desires.

      I also disagree that Prophet Muhammad SAW left any veils regarding this issue. Quran as well as many hadiths comment on things of very personal nature when it comes to intimacy. If there was any haram in masturbation, it definitely would have been made absolutely clear.

      Once again, everyone can judge for themselves what is right for them in their own given circumstances. Discouraging people about something from behind the false veils of religion is definitely a haram act and we should all refrain from it.

      Brother, thanks for your detail answer. My point is that whenever the issue of masturbation is raised, I see Ghamidi Centre with full zeal start to advocate this act. I do not see any additional comments, like I mentioned above, giving youngsters advice to refrain themselves from watching pornography and encourage them to do their duty of praying five time daily. And I mean always giving a package answer specially in this case, your answer plus some advice to deal with this immodest act. And trying to follow Prophet’s advise to get married, if possible.

      I find it rather absurd that us young people are advised to get married when marriage is made so difficult for us because of so many reasons.

      I don’t see how this action can be considered immodest. In itself I don’t see the immodesty unless you look at it from a puritan’s lens

      Lastly, you have to understand that in this regard our societies and and religious misinterpretation have created undue pressures on our youth that lead to guilt, aggression, fear, lack of confidence, lack of focus, and several other psychological disorders. In many cases it eventually even leads to zina, which is the exact opposite of the behavior required by God.

      I hope that you will understand and appreciate this and in the future refrain from such irresponsible comments.

    @Munnoo The Hadith from Mulim and Bukhari that you referred has nothing to do with it as Prophet SAW is talking that if anyone can support wife he should marry as it restrain eyes and protect against immorality who can not do so he fasts as it bring down his sexual desire.

    If you read it carefully and attentively Prophet SAW referring to Zina that if someone has the desire to do that he should marry immediately if he can support a wife if not then he should fast from protecting himself against Zina as it bring down sexual de
