Masturbation is against the spirit of modesty in Islam. For those who believe in Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari, following advise was given by Prophet Muhammad pbuh to guard modesty (i.e. private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.),

    Sahih Bukhari – 5066

Narrated `Abdullah: We were with the Prophet while we were young and had no wealth whatever. So Allah’s Apostle said, O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power.

    Sahih Muslim – 3398

Alqama reported: While I was walking with ‘Abdullah at Mina, ‘Uthman happened to meet him. He stopped there and began to talk with him. Uthman said to him: Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, should we not marry you to a young girl who may recall to you some of the past of your bygone days; thereupon he said: If you say so, Allah’s Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) said: 0 young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes from casting (evil glances). and preserves one from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting for it is a means of controlling sexual desire.

These narrations have nothing to do with masturbation.

masturbation tab tak insan nhi krta jab tak wo zehen ma kuch bura sochy na ya phr hawas se kuch bura dekhy na suny na jo usy nhi dekhna sunna chahiye.kion k har wo chez burai ha jo aik insan apny bary ma chahta ha k usky sath na ho,to jab aik insan dosry insan k bary ma bury khiyal zehen ma lata ha ya unko any deta ha ya kuch dekhta ha ya sunta jo usy nhi chaiye to tab tak masturbation insan nhi krta.han agar aik insan bina kuch bina sochy bina kuch gair ikhlaki dekhy suny bagair,or apni sehat or rab ki di hui naimat ki naqadri na shukri kiye bagair krta ha to phr thek ha jo k impossible hi ha takriban.

or aik hadees bhi ha k jiska mafhom kuch is tarah ha k insan k private parts to bs tasdeek krty ha usky zina ki jo wo pehly ankh kan ya dosry hawas se kr chuka hta ha.

or ahadees to aik choty se dour ma deen ki applications se mutalik riwayat ha asal deen to quran o sunnat ma ha asal framework to quran o sunnat ma ha.to agar us dor ma log shadia krty thy jis waja se koi riwayat nhi ha is se mutalik to iska matlab ye nhi k ye jaiz hojaye ga amal.

har amal ko quran o sunnat k frame ma rakh k dekha jaye ga to agar is amal ko rakh k dekha jaye to saaf galat malom hta ha.bar bar allah tala shadi krny ki targib dete ha roza rakh k shehwat ko thanda krny ka kehty ha.aurto ko kheti kehty ha,na shukri se insan ko naqadri se insan ko mana krty ha,fohsoh kamo k kareeb jany se bhi man krty ha.to kesw ye kam allow ho sakta ha.

or opr mention ahadees ma bhi roza ko bht amh kaha gya ha to agar to ye kam allow hta or log krty hty to roza k bary ma allah tala or rasol saw talqeen na krty.

quran sirf wo bunyady bata deta ha k jis k zariye insan khud sahi galat ma fark kr skta ha to ab agar is bary ma yr future ma or nai peda hony wali bemario k bary ma agar quran ya ahadess mention nhi krty to iska matlab ye nhi k wo allow ha.

Juned Ahmed please provide valid references. Laws are not derived from opinions – but solid evidence from the Quran and the Sunnah. There are no verses of the Quran as you stated above that encourage fasting in order to curb sexual urge. There’s a narration in that regard, but narrations are situational and don’t provide a basis for legislation.

If a biological need is made haram, it has to be evident in the Quran and the Sunnah without any guesswork or inferences.

To the contrary Ibn e Hazam has provided several references from sahaba who considered masturbation to be permissible.

bilkul haram to nhi keh sakty kion k insani jabilat py mabni gunah ha.or us darjy ka bhi nhi jis darjy ka zina ha,lekin better yehi ha k roza rkhy jye ya bacha jye jitna ho saky or tab hi kia jye jab insan sabr na kr saky or sath ma is choty gunah k sath or gunaho ko na milae.lekin agar is gunah ko bilkul hi allow kr dia jye ga to ye aisa gunah ha jo insan ko lazzat deta ha or phr insan ko addat lag jati ha or phr insan ko bht nuqsannat pohnochty ha.

i think ye baat k islam ne masturbation ko haram nhi kaha kion k insan ki ye biological need ha ye islam ki haqqaniyat ki bhi aik daleel ha.

ma agree krta hu k masturbation in general haram nhi ha lekin jab insan ye kam zrorat se zada krny lag jye to gunah ban jati ha or is kam k sath or gunah mila le to phr ye jaiz kam haram ban jata ha.

What made you decide that Hadiths from Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari don’t provide a basis for legislation but references from Ibn e Hazam does?

First of all, nothing in the Quran or hadith prohibits masturbation. Those who consider it forbidden argue from Quran verses 23:5-7. The linguistic error in understanding these verses has been clarified by Ghamidi sahab. Please see:

    Discussion 35351 • Reply 35355

Secondly, the confusion about why hadith does not provide a basis for legislation stems from not understanding what the nature of hadith corpus really is. I invite you to investigate this topic in a bit more detail with a sincere and an open mind. In short, hadiths mostly relate Prophet Muhammad SAW’s application of God’s law (present in the Quran and the Sunnah) in a particular situations. Since majority of hadith reports do not include context, when we take one and apply it as a general rule, a lot of times we end up with results that are exactly opposite of the Quran, the Sunnah, the hadith itself, and are even counter to reason and rationality.

For example, a hadith is generally quoted about fasting in order to control sexual urges. Now imagine a soldier who is away from home for years at a stretch protecting our borders in excruciatingly cold temperatures. Or a construction worker who digs mountains in excruciatingly hot temperatures. If we advise them to fast, they will definitely die out of dehydration. Then why would Prophet SAW give people such an advise? We could only know if we knew the context. One could argue that this advise doesn’t apply to extreme conditions – but halal and haram are generic, not conditional. Exceptions can be conditional, but then again we would need evidence from God about what can be considered an exception.

I invite you to research the topic of hadith more academically. Videos in the following discussion can be a very good starting point:

    Discussion 21789

Lastly, I did not present Ibn-e-Hazm’s evidence from the companions as a basis for any legislation. Legislation by definition forbids certain things or sets their boundaries. For example, walking on the streets is permissible by default. If our government wants to make it forbidden for any reason or set some boundaries around it they will legislate.

That said, I can definitely see that some people might consider masturbation wrong, and I respect their opinion as long as they do not try to impose it on others. When we term something as haram, we need to have clear evidence from God. One could argue that it’s immoral and God forbids everything immoral, but morality only comes into picture in reference to our behavior with others. For example, lying to one self, or cheating one self is universally not considered immoral.

Yes but it doesn’t mean that we can make anything haram on our bodies according to our own wishes. God has given us our bodies and it is Him who has given us certain biological needs. In order for us to consider fulfilling one such need as haram, we need clear evidence from Him. With statements of justification like this we only serve our own ideas of how the religion should be, not the intent of God.

    • Munnoo Khan

      Member April 9, 2021 at 12:56 pm

I don’t think anybody here is saying it is Haram. It is not modest and does not compliance with the spirit of Islam. As we believe we all are in this temporary world for a test. After we die we will have eternal life hopefully in Jannat. To achieve that reward we must prove that we deserve that. The way Ghamidi school is presenting this issue, they are indirectly encouraging our youngsters to involve in such immodest act.

Instead, Ghamidi school should discourage our young generation to watch pornography, which in most cases ends up in masturbation.

Some youngster will still do it but please do not make it official. Please leave the curtain there as was left by our Prophet Muhammad pbuh and spend more energy in promoting his pbuh advise to get married, if possible. Also encourage Muslims to offer five times prayers which will definitely calm down their immodest desires.

    • Faisal Haroon

      Moderator April 9, 2021 at 1:30 pm

I completely agree with the first few sentences.

I do however disagree that Ghamidi Center is encouraging people to engage in the activity. Our job is to educate people about Islam without any consideration for our own preferences. When we tell people with evidence that masturbation is not haram, we also tell people with all our energies that the purpose of Islam is to attain purification (tazkiya) and explain to them in every which way possible how to do it. This doesn’t mean that we should hide things out of our own desires.

I also disagree that Prophet Muhammad SAW left any veils regarding this issue. Quran as well as many hadiths comment on things of very personal nature when it comes to intimacy. If there was any haram in masturbation, it definitely would have been made absolutely clear.

Once again, everyone can judge for themselves what is right for them in their own given circumstances. Discouraging people about something from behind the false veils of religion is definitely a haram act and we should all refrain from it.

Brother, thanks for your detail answer. My point is that whenever the issue of masturbation is raised, I see Ghamidi Centre with full zeal start to advocate this act. I do not see any additional comments, like I mentioned above, giving youngsters advice to refrain themselves from watching pornography and encourage them to do their duty of praying five time daily. And I mean always giving a package answer specially in this case, your answer plus some advice to deal with this immodest act. And trying to follow Prophet’s advise to get married, if possible.

I find it rather absurd that us young people are advised to get married when marriage is made so difficult for us because of so many reasons.

I don’t see how this action can be considered immodest. In itself I don’t see the immodesty unless you look at it from a puritan’s lens

Munnoo Khan first of all, this forum is not the entire offering of the Ghamidi Center. The whole gamut of our offerings include several courses, Sunday School, videos, books, articles, personal advise to individuals and a whole lot more. A fundamental part of our message is purification required by God as is evident from our entire content.

Secondly, on this forum our aim is to have focused discussions. If a question is about masturbation in the context of haram/halal, the responses from moderators you see will generally only address that concern. If you or someone else would like to provide additional good advise, you are more than welcome to do so. Besides your perception in this regard is not entirely correct if you read all of our posts and responses. I’m providing a sampling below:

Lastly, you have to understand that in this regard our societies and and religious misinterpretation have created undue pressures on our youth that lead to guilt, aggression, fear, lack of confidence, lack of focus, and several other psychological disorders. In many cases it eventually even leads to zina, which is the exact opposite of the behavior required by God.

I hope that you will understand and appreciate this and in the future refrain from such irresponsible comments.
